Matt Watson - Associate

I believe that if you work hard, stay kind, and trust the process, amazing things will happen. That belief has shaped how I approach life and how I connect with the people around me.

My career began in consulting, where I spent more than ten years working with businesses of all sizes. I started by auditing financial statements and later moved into helping organisations through challenging turnarounds, transactions, and periods of change. Over time, I became part of commercial teams focused on growth and performance. I enjoyed the complexity of the work, but what stayed with me most were the people behind the numbers. I saw how financial stress can shape lives and how the right guidance and support can create confidence and peace of mind.

These experiences, along with my background as a Chartered Accountant, gave me a strong technical foundation and taught me the importance of structure, discipline, and adaptability. They also showed me that financial wellbeing is about more than numbers. It is about clarity, confidence, and understanding. Now, as I complete my Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning and work towards Certified Financial Planner accreditation, I am focused on combining technical expertise with purpose to help people make thoughtful, informed decisions about their financial futures.

I see a financial planner as being like a doctor, not for your physical health but for your financial wellbeing. My role is to help people build solid, lasting foundations so they can live within their means, achieve their goals, and feel secure about the future. Life will always have its surprises, both good and bad, but what matters most is focusing on what we can control, learning from the past, and being prepared for the unexpected.

Community and connection are central to my life. I have volunteered for many years with Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club, where I serve as Finance Director, supporting the club’s long-term sustainability. I am also a committee member of the Trinity College Old Boys’ Association and a rowing coach at Trinity College, where I mentor students to develop discipline, resilience, and teamwork both on and off the water.

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active through the gym, pilates, and yoga, and spending time outdoors with my Whippet, Finn. I love learning, helping others, reading, writing, listening to music or a good history podcast, and taking moments to slow down and appreciate life.

When your financial health is strong, everything else in life has more room to grow. That is why I do what I do - to help people make decisions that bring them stability, confidence, and peace of mind for the future.
